For many computer users, shareware – and, of course, downloads in general – represent major headaches. The sad thing is that there are way too many applications, utilities, and general downloads that aren’t worth the time. At its worst, not only will the download be useless and cost the user time of installing/uninstalling the program, but some can be buggy and/or damage the system.
Yet, there are some steps that should be taken in order to choose a quality shareware program. Such programs can be extremely useful and worth the small price paid for the program. Before you even consider the program, make sure it fits your needs. It is not uncommon for users to start downloading programs before reading its description, which can translate into downloading a program that doesn’t even fit the user’s needs.
When you are searching for that perfect program, do what you can to ensure its quality. Sometimes an obscure company with no reviews can be a warning sign. This actually brings us to another tip: try to read reviews on the program. Many websites that host different programs/downloads will include user reviews, which can save you the pain of a bad program or point you to one that is well-received.
As other general guidelines for downloads, be sure to monitor the program on your system. If it is taking up a lot of your system’s memory, you might want to look for something else (especially if it’s not that complicated, in regard to the function of the program). You should also note where the program is located on your computer and anything it may leave behind, when the inevitable uninstall takes place (of some, hopefully not all, programs you try). You don’t want “leftover” files from the program on your system.
With some easy steps choosing quality software programs isn’t that difficult. Remember to take advantage of free software trials and to download safe and well-received (if possible) programs.
